Inxeba (The Wound)

South Africa’s Oscar hopes were dashed on Tuesday after Inxeba (The Wound), the country’s official submission, was snubbed by the Academy Awards.

Today, the final five Foreign Language Film contenders were announced live from Beverly Hills by actors Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis. Sadly, Inxeba was not included in the list.

The 2018 nominees are: A Fantastic Woman (Chile), The Insult (Lebanon), Loveless (Russia), Body and Soul (Hungary), and The Square (Sweden).

South Africa did score somewhat in the category of Animated Short Film for Revolting Rhymes. While listed officially as a UK production it was co-produced by Triggerfish Animation Studios in Cape Town.

Inxeba – which releases in South Africa on 2 February – is one of the most internationally acclaimed local films ever produced. According to entertainment blogger Phil Mphela, it has become the most awarded South African film of all time with 19 awards across the globe, edging out Tsotsi’s 17 wins.

Over the weekend, it was also nominated for a GLAAD LGBTQ Media Award for Outstanding Film – Limited Release.

Call Me by Your Name, another acclaimed gay-themed film, received four Oscar nominations on Tuesday, including Best Picture. It was also nominated for Actor in a Leading Role (Timothée Chalamet), Adapted Screenplay (James Ivory) and Original Song (Mystery of Love, by Sufjan Stevens).

Call Me By Your Name

Call Me By Your Name is a coming of age story about Elio, a teenager spending the summer in Italy (played by Chalamet), who falls in love with Oliver (Armie Hammer), an American academic. The film will be released in South Africa on 23 February.

The Shape of Water, a fantasy romance by director Guillermo del Toro, is the clear front runner for this year’s event, with a whopping 13 nominations. Dunkirk received eight nominations, while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven.

The 2018 Oscar winners will be announced on Sunday 4 March, in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Below is the full list of nominees for the 90th Academy Awards.
