One of anti-gay bigot Steven Anderson’s fellow hate preachers has stepped down after being embroiled in a sex and drugs scandal.

Donnie Romero, who headed up the Stedfast Baptist Church in in Fort Worth, Texas, announced his resignation to his congregation last week.

At a church meeting led by Anderson on Wednesday, a tearful Romero said: “I haven’t been ruling my house well. I have been a terrible husband and father.” He added that he was very sorry for the hurt he had caused, but did not elaborate further.

Anderson, who explained he had come to the church as a friend to help out, gave more details about the “grievous sins” that led to Romero’s resignation in a follow-up YouTube video. “Basically, the major sin involved was being with prostitutes. Also marijuana and gambling were discovered,” he said.

Like Anderson, Romero is known for his homophobic hate speech and for attacking the 49 victims killed in the Orlando nightclub massacre.

Romero said at the time: “These 50 sodomites are all perverts and paedophiles, and they are the scum of the earth, and the earth is a little bit better place now.”

He also stated that he would never allow “these dirty f**gots inside my church… They are predators and given an opportunity to snatch one of your children, they would do it in a heartbeat.” Romero’s Stedfast Baptist Church has been described as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Anderson, who operates the Arizona-based Faithful Word Baptist Church, later confirmed that yet another homophobic pastor, Jonathan Shelley, was taking over the Stedfast Baptist Church.

In October, Shelley preached about gay people: “They hate God. God has already given them up. They’re beasts, they’re wicked, they’re abominable, they’re filthy today.”

On 13 September 2016, then Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba banned Anderson as “a prohibited person in South Africa” due to his hate speech. Anderson has also been barred from entering Botswana, Jamaica, the UK and Canada. The preacher has stated that killing gay people would free the world from the AIDS epidemic and praised the Orlando massacre. He also preaches that governments must execute gay people.
