South Africa’s most visible openly gay celebrity has denied reports that he’s planning to turn his wedding day into a Kardashian-style TV extravaganza.
According to a Daily Sun article on Sunday, Somizi Mhlongo has signed a R3 million deal to broadcast his wedding to fiancé Mohale Motaung live on the Mzansi Magic channel.
A source told the tabloid that, “Their wedding will be broadcast live on national TV”, adding that, “It’ll obviously be a star-studded affair because Somizi has a lot of celebrity friends who are close to him.”
Somizi is no stranger to exposing his life to the cameras; he already has a popular reality show on Mzansi Magic, titled Living The Dream With Somizi, which has run for three seasons.
Fans of the star will be disappointed, however, after the Idols SA judge disputed the article, reports The Juice. He commented on Metro FM’s The Fresh Breakfast Show: “Write anything about anyone but let it be factual because it destroys a whole lot of families.”
In a statement to Drum magazine, the TV channel itself also denied the claim, but seemed to suggest that it was open to the idea of featuring the nuptials in some way or the other.
“Somizi Mhlongo is a member of the Mzansi Magic family,” said M-Net head of PR, Nondumiso Mabece. “Even though we do not have a contract to broadcast his wedding, we would be honoured to share in the celebrations of his special day.”
Somizi announced that he had gotten engaged to Mohale in Paris on social media in March but he has since kept details about the wedding, including the date, private and out of the media.
In 2011, American reality TV star Kim Kardashian infamously filmed her wedding to Kris Humphries for a two part television special, allegedly earning millions. Critics said that the marriage, which only lasted 72 days, was a money-making publicity stunt, which she has denied.
